Link popularity can be defined as the measurement of the number of outside websites that link to your site.

Link popularity has become a factor within many search engine algorithms and plays a role in determining search engine placement and pagerank. The theory is, in the eyes of the search engines, that if other sites are linking to your website it must be good. Thus, it deserves a boost in rankings.
