THE ALL-IMPORTANT
TITLE TAG FOR SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
You've done extensive keyword research, wrote killer copy and
have an all-around awesome site that is both visitor and search
engine friendly. High rankings and good PR are sure to come your
way, right? Perhaps. But if there's one element that can burst
your bubble it's the Meta Title tag. This is by far as important
as all the other elements involved in building a successfully
optimized website!
What is a Title Tag?
A title tag is a piece of HTML code that creates the
words that appear along the top bar of the web browser. For example,
the Title tag currently displayed on this page is "The all
important Title Tag for search engine optimization."
The HTML code looks like this:
<HEAD>
<TITLE>The all important Meta Title tag for search engine
optimization</TITLE>
</HEAD>
This tag is typically the first element in the <HEAD>
section of the HTML code, followed by the Meta
Description and Meta Keywords
tags.
Why are Title Tags important?
When optimizing your website, it’s important
not to overlook this tag as all search engines and visitors use
it to gather information about your website. In some cases, the
text inside the title tag is considered when indexing. In addition,
if the title is missing some search engines display the page as
"Untitled". Ugh!
Title Tag Tips
- The title tag should be unique for each page within your site.
- It should contain specific keywords and phrases that are found
on that particular page, and only if they fit there naturally.
- While there isn't a word limit, the majority of the search
engines will display between 60 and 115 characters. To play
it safe, write concise titles that aren't too wordy in order
to have consistent results.
- Don't repeat the same words too many times. That may appear
as a red flag to the search engines.
- If you have a particular title in mind but the words it contains
are not found in the body copy of your page, think twice! Either
change your title or think of a way to successfully and naturally
integrate those words into the copy. If it can't be done, change
the title!
- Some web page creation tools automatically generate a title
tag. In this case it's important that you go back and edit it,
otherwise you may find your page titles to be Page 1, Page 2,
etc.
